Roadmap, Governance and Operational Demonstration of Space Traffic Coordination and Management

Track: Space Traffic Management

Time: 21 October 2020, 10:00-11:55 ET

Return to Summit

This session will explore the various roadmap, policy/governance, and technical aspects of conducting Space Traffic Coordination and Management (STCM). The session will start with introductory remarks from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Space Commerce, followed by presentations by AIAA Space Traffic Management Task Group leaders and the Space Data Association. The Panelists will share information on a potential Space Traffic Management (STM) policy roadmap, current STM global space governance, and a technical SSA and STCM demonstration that highlights the dramatic benefits of government, spacecraft operator, and SSA service provider collaboration as well as the inherent challenges related to the SSA and STCM disciplines. The audience will have a chance to provide feedback and ask questions about the methodologies and tools used to accomplish this ground-breaking demonstrator through the use of electronic voting on their smart phones or tablets. They will also have an opportunity to learn about real-world collision threats and to engage with the panel members through a live Question and Answer interaction.

The STCM demonstration itself will be composed of two campaigns, where we will explore, for a small but orbit-diverse set of operational spacecraft, the operational challenges and solution trade space associated with flight safety and STCM. Campaign #1 will demonstrate the utility of comprehensive data fusion across multiple data sources and data types and quantify its benefits to orbit solution timeliness, historical and predictive positional accuracy, completeness, transparency, and comparative SSA. Campaign #2 will then explore the benefit to safety of flight by comprehensively gathering and fusing space data across multiple data sources and data types. In other words, how did the availability of this better SSA data yield safer flight, less maneuvers, less conjunctions of concern?
